Being a gigantic nerd, I write campaigns for Warhammer 40,000 in my free time. It's hard to get a group -or even a single individual- to commit to fighting a series of linked battles with near enough the same forces. But it allows you to drive a narrative and write a story... Which is what I live for. Win or lose, so long as the game was a blast and told a tale, I'm happy. Back in January, my buddy from Scotland (Hi Liam!) made the trek out to Kansas to pit the forces of the Black Legion against my Imperial Guardsmen. Without further ado, the first two battles for the planet of Tavian I.
So that's the basic format for my campaign mission briefs, copied and pasted out of the Word doc where I keep such things. Depending on the campaign, I may add some hastily done map layouts in a word processor. If you happen to refight any of these missions as posted here, let me know how they went. I'm not sure I balanced the campaign very well.
At any rate, the Vigilus Defiant missions are a hoot. Very much "all or nothing" and can end far quicker than one of the standard missions. But, they do work well for a thematic mission between friendly players. Sadly, neither of us took many pics. Possibly because we were focused on the delicious bottle -ahem, barrel- of rum we'd brought out, and sampling Shiner Bock.
Expect a few more posts dealing with the Tavian Campaign. It was a wild ride, and deserves commemoration.
Tavian I
Planetstrike
1--Mission: Slaughter
Wrinkle: Chaos:
+1” to Advance / Charge moves. Imperium: +1Ld, -1CP
Reward: the victor
receives +1 CP in the next mission
The
forces of Chaos, encouraged by their successful destruction of the Imperial
Navy assets in orbit, conduct a Planetstrike at the Gravenfell Plains. The
Imperial Guard, fresh from a training regime think themselves ready for a
fight: though their supply lines are perilously thin.
The Imperial
victory at Makrappe Bunker Complex against the forces of Harrken Worldclaimer
is overshadowed by the defeat of the Krassian 147th to the north and
south. The landing grounds of the Gravenfell Plains belong to the legions of
Chaos.
2-- Mission: The Angels Of Death Descend (Vigilus Defiant, pg144)
Wrinkle:
Artillery Suppression (Vigilus Defiant, pg164)
Stance: Imperium defends, Chaos attacks
Reward: the
victor receives +1 CP in the next mission
With their
foothold secured, Hakanor’s Reavers fight their way inland in the teeth of a
prepared defensive line at the Gravenfell Scarp. With intelligence gained from
survivors of the initial assault, Imperial Command rushes artillery units to
suppress the oncoming Chaos legions...
The
entrenched rifle squads of the 745th successfully hold back a tide
of traitors, though casualties from the Black Legion Havocs likewise annihilate
Imperial troops. Timely counterattacks by the Winterborn Crusader Order were
able to repel the assault...
