Saturday Gameday

My buddy with the Steel Legion came over for another game against my 745th Storm Troopers... Elite heavy armor in the form of four Leman Russ Tank Commanders, and mechanized infantry.

I really enjoy games against the Guard, or the Renegades & Heretics list. Just humans with strength-3 weapons. No genetically-engineered super-soldiers tearing up the field, no monstrous alien creatures bursting from the undergrowth. Just normal people trying to kill each other, where folks know the value of a rifle and a sharp piece of metal. Warms the heart, so it does.

Mission: The Relic
Deployment: Hammer and Anvil
Size: 1,500 points

First turn went to the Steel Legion... Who used the initiative to strip most of the hull points from my valkyries and brutalize my volleygun squad. The shot below sums up the infantry-fighting that happened throughout the game: he'd disembark, launch blistering salvos of lasgun fire into my beleaguered Storm Troopes, and then load right back up into their tracks.

Due to a weird board set up, my Crusaders were able to push across the board, seize the Relic (the dog miniature), and begin scooting away from the Armageddon armored onslaught.

On my right flank, I'd dug in most of my characters, my Regimental Marksman (Vindicare Assassin), and a volleygun squad.

Turn 2 consisted of my men dying, his advancing, and more valkyries exploding. The lascannon team in the foreground spent the entire game trying to bring down that bird, and they finally did on turn 4. Way to go little guys!

By turn 3, I finally remembered to bring in my reserves, and set up an anti-armor section in front of a mechanized platoon. The stage was set for a pitched battle, infantry line against infantry line.

The result? He butchered me. Slaughtered the drop troops and rolled right over their corpses. Turn four, the last of anti-armor squads were dead, and a very few stormies were fighting a last ditch effort to blow up a couple of command Russ. We got one of them...

Hand-to-hand brutality: Storm Trooper squad against a couple of exposed infantry commanders. In a fight against basic human, power swords are worth it. He chopped my lads right up.

One of the few bright spots for me tactically was the vindicare blasting his Lord Commissar's head clean off. His camo scheme actually kept him hidden long enough for the Steel Legion vehicles to roll past him, and then when the Legionnaires disembarked? Blam.

Tactically, operationally, and in luck-of-the-dice, he beat me like I owed him money. But since I grabbed the Relic on turn one and hung on to it, I technically "won" that battle. If ninety-percent casualties and complete loss of the field can be considered a victory. He really did deserve a win. Great game. I can't wait to see his Death Korps painted up.

101st Armageddon Steel Legion: 0
745th Grayson Drop Regiment: 1
Result: Imperial Guard Victory

Work on the light-up valkyrie continues... Interior painting has begun, anyway. I've got the wiring all worked out, I just need to get it done.

-Six out.
